One Breath, Many Songs · 6 min 44 s

Choi Hee Jun said he wanted to hear classical music and proposed a calm, joyful piece for meditation, made as an integrative pluralism (Fusionism) centred on classical music. He described integrative pluralism as a joining of monism and pluralism. This piece is my reading of that description in music.

From beginning to end the strings hold a low D and A without a break. Above them an eight-bar ground returns again and again, and the five-note theme first sung by the piano is taken up by flute, harp and clarinet, each two bars later. The same song never overlaps itself at the same moment, and the different voices never erase one another. Baroque ground and canon, the East Asian pentatonic scale, a flute borrowing the ornaments of the daegeum, and Arvo Pärt’s tintinnabuli live together in one piece. One bar lasts five seconds, and two bars make one breath. This is a design of the composition only; no effect on meditation or health is claimed.

The Same Wind, Different Names · 6 min 6 s

Next, Choi Hee Jun proposed making music for Western and Eastern instruments in the manner of integrative pluralism (Fusionism), bringing the Korean gayageum or other Korean, Chinese and Japanese instruments into harmony with Western ones. The gayageum is the instrument he named as an example; adding the saenghwang, yanggeum and daegeum, the structure of the piece and its title were my choices.

The saenghwang belongs to one family of instruments called saenghwang in Korea, sheng in China and shō in Japan, and it sounds on both the out-breath and the in-breath. In this piece the saenghwang plays A♭ and E♭ without a break from beginning to end: three names, one wind. Above it the daegeum and the piano sing the same theme, and the gayageum and yanggeum answer. The yanggeum is the European dulcimer that reached Joseon by way of China and became a Korean instrument. From 3:12 a heterophony follows, in which four instruments sing one melody together, each with its own ornaments and timing.

The sounds of the Korean instruments are real performance recordings released by the National Gugak Center, cut into single notes. To match the piano, every note was moved into equal temperament by no more than about one semitone; the traditional intonation is somewhat reduced by this, and that is a limit of the piece. After the first mix, Choi Hee Jun said the saenghwang and strings were too loud and strong, so I lowered and softened both.
