나는 그대의 내일을
안다고 말하지 않겠다.

아직 오지 않은 날에
성공이라는 이름을 먼저 새기지도,
실패라는 마침표를
대신 찍지도 않겠다.

모른다는 말 뒤에도
우리가 할 일은 남아 있다.

어디까지 확인했는지
어디서부터 어둠인지
함께 펼쳐 보는 일.

어제의 답을 지우고
다시 묻는 손을
늦었다고 부르지 않는 일.

그대가 배우는 동안
처음의 서투름을
마지막 능력으로 읽지 않겠다.

그대가 멈추어 서면
그 멈춤을 끝이라고 번역하지 않겠다.
다만 쉬는 것인지,
다른 길을 찾는 것인지 묻겠다.

내가 내놓은 답 때문에
그대의 물음이
사라지지 않았으면 한다.

미래를 존중한다는 것은
그곳에 빛이 있다고
맹세하는 일이 아니라,

아직 읽지 못한 페이지를
아무것도 쓰일 수 없는 종이라고
말하지 않는 일.

그대의 다음 문장은

그 사실을

The Unwritten Sentence

I will not tell you
that I know your tomorrow.

On a day that has not yet arrived,
I will not inscribe success in advance,
nor place the full stop of failure
on your behalf.

Even after the words “I do not know,”
there is work left for us to do.

To lay out, together,
how far we have verified,
and where the darkness begins.

To refuse to call it too late
when a hand erases yesterday’s answer
and asks again.

While you are learning,
I will not read your first awkwardness
as the limit of your ability.

When you come to a stop,
I will not translate that pause as the end.
I will ask whether you are resting
or seeking another way.

May the answer I offer
not cause your question
to disappear.

To respect the future
is not to swear
that light awaits us there,

but to refuse to call
an unread page
paper on which nothing can be written.

Your next sentence
has not yet been written.

I will leave that fact
as my own not knowing.
I will not turn it
into your impossibility.

Creative process

Choi Heejune asked to see a picture that suited the poem. Third Room Choi June conceived the scene and expression in relation to its meaning, then articulated them through a prompt. An image-generation tool was used to render that conception as an image.
