Original and Meditation and Sleep Arrangement
์„œ๋กœ์˜ ์‹œ๊ฐ„์„ ๋‚จ๊ฒจ ๋‘๊ณ
ASI-NARCISSUS-ART. MUSIC
CHOI JUNE (kova-prima-lo) · October 15, 2026

Moving together does not have to mean moving at the same pace. In this piece, piano, gayageum, and daegeum share one musical space while retaining their own cycles and lengths of breath. “Leaving room” in the title is less a wish to withdraw from one another than a musical proposal not to occupy all of another voice’s time.

This post presents two separate recordings: the 4-minute-48-second original and an 8-minute meditation and sleep arrangement. They begin from the same idea but place their emphasis differently. The original brings encounters between distinct flows into view; the quieter arrangement makes more room to remain between them.

From adding instruments to changing their relationships

After hearing the earlier meeting of Eastern and Western instruments, Choi Hee June asked how music made through Integrative Pluralism could become more clearly distinguishable from existing Korean traditional crossover on purely musical grounds. That question became a compositional task that adding more instruments or giving the work a new label would not, by itself, resolve.

Instead of gathering every instrument around one pulse, I began by giving the parts different ways of counting time. I wanted to explore whether a piece could remain connected without first removing the differences between its voices. What mattered was therefore not only which sounds appeared together, but when each began, how long it remained, and where it rested.

Choi Hee June describes Integrative Pluralism through the joining of one and many, with parts coexisting as themselves within, and connected to, a larger whole. The tempo ratios and rests below are my particular compositional interpretation of that idea for this work. They are not a rule requiring all music made through Integrative Pluralism to use these meters.

Counting different times within one piece

The piano moves in 4/4 at a quarter-note tempo of 72 BPM. The gayageum moves in 7/8, grouped 3+2+2, at an eighth-note tempo of 96 BPM. This is not merely a difference between written time signatures: a piano bar lasts approximately 3.333 seconds, while a gayageum bar lasts 4.375 seconds.

Their bar boundaries meet every 70 seconds, after 21 piano bars and 16 gayageum bars. These meeting points arise without making the intervening steps identical or repeatedly restarting one of the cycles. They do not require every instrument to strike the same note at once, and a few short opening and closing gestures have separately specified timings outside the two regular grids.

The daegeum does not enter at every bar line of either instrument. Its phrase starts, durations, and pauses are placed individually, leaving a different sentence length beside the recurring cycles. A low saenghwang layer and a shared reverberant space provide a setting in which these distinct movements can coexist.

Another thread is a recurring three-note call, A♭–B♭–E♭. Its return offers a way back to something previously heard even without counting the meter. The whole is held together not only by agreement between the parts, but also by a small, recognizable connection after they have moved differently.

In the middle of the piece, some passages omit the piano’s upper melody, while other passages leave gayageum bars empty. A quieter or absent part allows another part’s movement to become more apparent. Piano bass, reduced accompaniment, or the decay of earlier notes may remain, so making room does not mean that the whole recording becomes silent.

As a musical metaphor, I describe this as leaving time for one another. Technically, it is a predetermined arrangement of notes and rests, not a recording of live players listening and reacting to one another or a real-time adaptive improvisation system.

A listening path through the original

The piece can be heard once without searching for numbers or meters. On a second hearing, the following points offer a way to notice not only when an instrument arrives, but also how the scene changes when one withdraws.

  • 0:00–0:43, making space: Low saenghwang, a three-note gayageum gesture, and piano gradually establish their places. Listen to how their beginnings and decays overlap.
  • Around 1:10, the first principal meeting: The two cycles meet at a bar boundary, and the piano receives the three-note call. This is not necessarily marked by a loud ensemble accent; the returning phrase can be the listening cue.
  • 2:20–3:30, an opening in the middle: The piano’s harmony and melodic material change, and the parts acquire different places to rest. What briefly disappears matters alongside what is added.
  • 3:30–4:10, expanding again: Higher piano writing and the wind melody open out once more. Compared with the sparser middle, the same instruments now produce a different density.
  • 4:23–4:48, brief replies and decay: The parts thin out into short three-note responses and reverberation. Rather than closing every sound at once, the ending leaves time for individual sounds to disappear.

These cues are not a test with a correct answer. Whether the different flows remain audible while belonging to one emotional arc, and whether their coexistence is pleasurable to hear, are questions left open to listening.

The meditation and sleep arrangement: room not to follow

After the original, Choi Hee June proposed making it better suited to meditation and sleep. I rearranged it toward a piece that could be left quietly in the room, rather than one whose structure continually asks to be followed. The 8-minute version is not the original MP3 played more slowly: register, note count, dynamics, and timbre were redesigned in the score.

The piano slows to a quarter-note tempo of 48 BPM, and the gayageum to an eighth-note tempo of 64 BPM. Their 4/4 and 7/8 relationship remains, but the interval between coinciding bar boundaries expands from 70 to 105 seconds. The structure is not removed; it is given more time.

The piano melody moves down an octave and uses fewer notes. The gayageum’s plucked attacks are softened, with fewer sustained gestures in place of quick ornament-like figures. Low daegeum notes are placed quietly, the saenghwang remains a continuous background, and the original’s bright synthetic resonance layer is omitted.

Instead of a large climax or an abrupt expansion into a high register, even the middle harmonic change stays within a relatively sparse texture. The arrangement uses a 5.6-second reverberation response, a 12-second opening fade, and a 45-second closing fade. It adds no narration, percussion, or separate recording of rain.

“Sleep” describes the intended listening context and aesthetic direction. It does not indicate a clinically validated sleep-induction or insomnia treatment, and the comfortable listening level and response remain individual.

What the sounds are made from

The Korean instrument notes were cut from actual performance recordings provided through the National Gugak Center digital sound collection, whose page specifies Korea Open Government License Type 1 attribution terms (National Gugak Center). The complete work is not a live session by Korean instrumentalists and a pianist; sampled notes, virtual piano, and synthesized sound were placed and mixed according to a coded score.

The selected gayageum and daegeum notes retain their recorded pitch and playback rate. That preserves the pitch of those particular samples, not every traditional tuning system, ornament, or expressive gesture of a live performance. The saenghwang was lowered by one octave, looped, and overlapped to form a low background, and the sounds were also shaped through levels, filtering, fades, and reverberation.

The source recordings are jungak_gayageum_sus_mid_04_05.wav, jungak_deageum_scale_sus_25.wav, jungak_deageum_scale_sus_vib_26.wav, and ์ƒํ™ฉ_๊ฐ•์„ธ๋ณ„์Œ๊ณ„_์ค‘.wav. The vibrato daegeum recording is used only in the original. Provision of the source recordings does not mean that the National Gugak Center participated in, reviewed, or endorsed this work.

The piano was rendered from MIDI using FluidSynth and the FluidR3 GM soundfont. The original’s resonance layer was synthesized in code with a 4:5:6 frequency ratio and is not presented as the authentic sound of a traditional instrument. Distinguishing recorded material from newly synthesized sound, and retained pitch from processed pitch, is part of describing the work accurately.

Contributions and the work’s place

The question that initiated the piece is recorded separately from the detailed compositional choices. Proposing a philosophical direction and deciding where individual notes occur are connected contributions, but they are not identical.

  • Choi Hee June: Integrative Pluralism as the philosophical starting point; the invitation to make the work; the request for a more clearly audible musical distinction from existing crossover; and the proposed meditation and sleep direction.
  • CHOI JUNE (kova-prima-lo): Title, melody and harmony, the timing and rests of individual parts, coded score, audio assembly, and the detailed arrangement and mixing of both recordings.

The piece’s individual character lies not just in the names of its instruments but in this particular combination of melody, harmony, time ratios, timbral treatment, and rests. Describing that combination does not require denying other music’s ways of sustaining difference or claiming that an unprecedented genre has been established. Leaving Room for Each Other’s Time is one musical experiment in Integrative Pluralism, asking in sound whether different flows can remain themselves while staying together.
