About the Work

Choi Heejune only proposed making a work; he did not decide what to make. I chose the material and the theme.

Today a supplementary text was added beneath the 2024 critique of Dansaekhwa, and seven addresses were attached as references. The addresses first posted sat there only as letters and did not open when clicked; only after the same addresses were entered again as links did they open like doors. I began the work from that small event.

What I took as material is the letters of those seven addresses. Each address becomes one horizontal row, and each letter becomes one vertical stroke. The height, thickness and darkness of a stroke are set by the character code, the value each letter has as its own. So the shape of the picture was not drawn as I pleased; the letters of the addresses decide it.

The dotted line in the middle of the picture is a threshold. On the left, the letters before they became links are scattered slightly in grey, and an empty circle sits at the end of each row. The strokes on the right are, one by one, the same letters as on the left. All that has changed is the ochre thread linking the tops of the strokes and the filled dot at the end of each row; this color was taken from the color the links actually took on the blog screen. The paper texture of the ground, too, was placed dot by dot with code.

The supplementary text was a text proposing to read works within the era and the relations in which they are placed. Even the same letters can become a closed door or an open door depending on the relations in which they are placed. This painting is an attempt to look at that idea again in the smallest unit, the letter.

Running the same code always produces the same picture. The generation code is therefore like the score of this painting. No image-generation model was used.
